Astrid studied criminology at the University of Ghent and gained her first experience of working in a European environment as a programme manager for drug research at BELSPO, within the European Research Area Network on Illicit Drugs (ERANID).

She then worked as a researcher for the Association for Alcohol and Drugs (VAD) on the European research project Focus on Youth, Football and Alcohol (FYFA).

She went on to work as a researcher for the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on the policy research into the guidance and treatment of sex offenders in prison and as a practical assistant to Professor Letizia Paoli at the KULeuven.

At the Flemish Peace Institute, she will focus on the theme of “firearms violence” and more specifically on the project INSIGHT.  This project aims to develop an online monitor for firearms incidents and seizures in the European Union and to centralise and further analyse the collected data on firearms violence and firearms trafficking in the EU.
