Under the radar: Transit of military goods – from licensing to control

Publication date: 25/04/2022

Controlling the transit and transshipment of military goods is essential to secure the legal international arms trade, to prevent diversion and to avoid the undesirable proliferation of conventional weapons. However, the efficient and effective implementation of such controls is for various reasons a highly challenging task for national governments.

In this report the Flemish Peace Institute analyzes transit control systems in seven European countries and identifies possibilities and challenges for international cooperation and information exchange.

During a virtual ATT-side-event, held on 27 April 2022, several recommendations and initiatives were forwarded that states parties could undertake, both within the framework of the ATT and at the national level.  Watch the integral recording of the event and the presentations of the panelists here.
