Side Event Project D-TECT: Examining technologies to counter the diversion of components of conventional weapons (with Diederik Cops)

Hosted by the Flemish Peace Institute, UNIDIR and the Permanent Mission of Flanders to the United Nations, this side event will present states parties and other stakeholders with expert perspectives and practical insights on the diversion of components used in conventional weapons, the potential relevance of technologies in strengthening efforts to counter their diversion to unauthorized end-users and end-uses and the challenges related to implementing such technologies. This side-event is part of project D-TECT, set up late 2022 by UNIDIR and the Flemish Peace Institute to develop and test an approach to identify and assess the utility and feasibility of applying specific technologies to enhance the prevention and detection of diversion efforts.

Speakers include: 

  • Katrien De Pauw, permanent representative of the Government of Flanders to the Office of the United Nations and multilateral organizations in Geneva.
  • Diederik Cops, senior researcher Flemish Peace Institute.
  • Rob Hunter-Perkins, head of research Conflict Armament Research.
  • Wolf-Christian Paes, Senior Fellow, International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS); Arms Expert, United Nations Panel of Experts on Yemen (2018-2023)

This side event will be moderated by Paul Holtom, head of the conventional arms and ammunition programme at UNIDIR.
