PROGRAM

Dr. Olivia Umurerwa Rutazibwa is a Belgian-Rwandan political scientist (PhD, Ugent) and former journalist at MO* Magazine. She is an Assistant Professor of Human Rights and Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In her research and teaching she focuses on decolonizing knowledge, solidarity and international relations.

“We already know enough,” the Swedish essayist Sven Lindqvist once wrote. “What we lack is the courage to draw conclusions from what we know.” Lindqvist made his statements when reflecting on colonial abuse. And about how we like to assume that people did not know about it or that different norms and values prevailed at the time. While previously it was a matter, then and now, of looking away in an organized manner. In her lecture, Olivia U. Rutazibwa reflects on the urgency of this insight – that the knowledge is available, but we lack the courage – for our society today. In 11 fragments she reflects with examples from current events, literature and personal anecdotes about what knowing and remembering with courage could look like.

His captivating narrative will be supported musically by Sara Salvérius and the Sun Sun Sun string ensemble.
